Not to long ago my Dusky Conure seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth! I live in the top floor of a tri-level house with just one window in the room that is always screened and almost always shut. My Conure is a very well trained parrot, (I used some of Chet Womachs training methods to teach him) he was well enough mannered to be allowed quite a bit of freedom and he always came back to his cage...Except for this one time. It was just a normal day for me, I opened Rocko's cage (that's his name) and cleaned my room a bit, then I went to the bathroom, when I got back Rocko was nowhere to be seen! I had left the door open to my room when I had left as well; I searched all over the house and even outside a bit, but to no avail. I went to bed very late that night feeling sick to my stomach, I had searched for hours all day and most of the night looking for Rocko.
The next day as I lay on my bed looking into my closet, wondering where else I could possibly look I saw the inner lining of my suit jacket TWITCH! My heart leaped! I bounded out of bed and into my closet, took down my suit jacket and to my delight found Rocko under the lining of my suit jacket!
After this experience I remembered that when a parrot starts climbing, he climbs until he reaches the top, on top of that if its dark he automatically thinks "oh, its night, time to sleep!" so what happened? He started climbing up my suit jacket and started climbing right up the inner lining! (the lining is sewn at the top) it got dark up there and he went to sleep.
So why am I typing all this? Well I want others to know about these two behaviors in birds. #1 birds climb untill they reach the top & #2 when its dark they sleep.

Hello bird lovers!
Most parrot owners have jobs and have to leave their parrot home alone all day, this can easily become very boring and monotonous for a parrot. Parrots love involvement, anything that is engaging or interesting (even if it's watching you brush your teeth) they love to observe and most importantly they love to be a part of what's going on. But your job is to somehow provide this without being there; I am going to suggest a few tips of my own that I have proven to work great. First of all buy a variety of toys, but don't barrage a parrots cage with toys, put a few in the parrots cage (depending on the size of the cage) and before the parrot gets tired of them rotate in some new ones and eject the old ones, you don’t need a huge variety of toys, just enough to have enough to keep it interesting. But be 
sure you position the toy so the parrot can easily reach it, a toy out of reach to a parrot is to you like an itch you can't scratch! Leaving the TV or Radio is a more common way to provide activity, if you resort to TV or Radio make sure it is something engaging like animal planet, discovery, or for radio, the ball game. Make sure the volume isn't to loud though or the bird could be startled by a peaceful program to a roaring commercial. Not all parrots take to this strategy though. Do not give the parrot a monotonous diet! Parrot's enjoy all kinds of food, feeding it just one diet is very very bad for the parrots morale, your parrot will be much happier with a wide variety of food. Stay away from junk food and caffeine though. If there is one piece of information I want you to walk away with tonight it is this, if you provide your parrot with something to be interested in he will be a happy bird. Providing the right envronment for a parrot is absolutely mandatory for you to enjoy a happy relationship with your parrot, when a parrot doesn't have the required elements for a happy healthy life it can become aggressive, self mutilating, the most common symptoms parrots acquire is feather plucking and screaming. Many of these symptoms can be stopped easily by attention to detail. First of all I will address an error commonly made by parrot owners, Cage Size; often times the parrots cage is far to small for it, this can easily cause all of the above symptoms to occur. I always recommend a cage to be at least 13 times as wide and high as the bird's wingspan, but really the bigger the cage the happier the bird. Place the cage in an area where there is a fair amount of activity going on "A parrot left to himself bringeth shame to his owner" (a modified version of proverbs 29:15) parrots enjoy activity and should not be caged off by themselves, however there should be an area in the cage where the parrot can if he desires be by himself. Always be sure that the parrots food and water source are maintained and the water changed regularly. Positionaing the cage against a solid wall is a good idea as well; it can give the parrot a sense of security. The parrots cage should always be below your eye level, especially for dominate parrots, being higher than you are makes the parrot feel like you are his inferior and will quickly develop an "attitude". If you have a huge cage then an easy solution to this problem would be to lower the perches or put a small deck or footstool around the cage. The perfect perch height is about chest level, being to low will have a bad effect on the parrot as well.

You own a parrot and you want to spend time training your parrot to do tricks, but the first thing you should be doing is spending time with the parrot building trust. After the parrot is comfortable being with you and enjoying your company, you can then take things to the next level. I know that you will find this information and these parrot training techniques useful if you apply them correctly, good luck training your bird!
Before I actually show you how to train your parrot to step up onto your hand, arm, shoulder or perch, I will give you some universal parrot training techniques.
· Use lots of positive reinforcement; punishing a parrot only makes your parrot mistrust you or makes it suspicious and fearful, you could never train a parrot that was in any of these states of
mind.
· Train your parrot in short regularly repeated sessions.
· Always make your training periods end positively; if your parrot is making an effort, reward your parrot generously, and move on to something else.
· If you want your parrot to be more interactive with other people then once you have the parrot trained let the parrot practice his new moves on other people.
· The parrot will enjoy being with you as long as you keep your sessions positive and once you have him trained to do whatever it is you are training him to do, you can then use the new trick to spend positive quality time with your parrot, trust me your bird will enjoy it.
The techniques I am going to reveal to you are good for all bird’s not just parrots.
· The first step to teaching your parrot to “step up” is choosing a command. Make sure the command word you choose always stays the same word while training so that the parrot can recognize it every time he hears it. It doesn’t really matter what word or words you choose just make sure they stay the same.
· Step two. Choose a time when the bird is not eating, preening etc…
· Step three. If your parrot is not responding well to training, try training out of sight of your bird’s cage in an area less familiar. This tends to make the parrot more attentive.
· Ok step number four. Position the perch, finger or whatever you are using level with the bird’s abdomen directly above the feet. Make sure you are close enough that it will be an easy step for your parrot. Next give the command. When the parrot climbs on give him treats and lots of praise, repeat this over and over again, the parrot will get the concept and will do it for you every time.
· Try not to let your parrot run up your arm when it steps on your hand. If your parrot does this, block it by putting your other hand in the way then give the step up command again to get him onto your other hand. Repeat as necessary. If your Parrot is keeps running up your arm, try to end the session with a good step up and carry on the training later.

Parrots are special, they are one of the few animals that can communicate with humans (the other species also being birds) this capability fascinates me. Their intelligence is sometimes astounding and some parrots have achieved the IQ of a 3-5 year old child, the part that thrills me most when training a parrot is the fact that that bird will be a loving companion for the rest of your life, that parrot you are working so hard to train will be your friend and companion and will give you tons of laughs just by their original behavior. ts first year (some never do at all but generally most do at their first year) talking can easily be encouraged by food. Food is also used to train your parrot to speak a word or sentence on cue and once the parrot has the concept he can really get good at it! Parrots are very social birds and most mate for life. they become easily attached to their trainers and owners so it is highly recommended that you train your own parrot. Most people buy their first parrot while it is still young. But first comes the question, "what should I be looking for in a parrot?" well the answer this question is usually in the parrot breeder! First look for a quality breeder (or store that obtains birds from good breeders) that handels his birds with love and care. Remember that How a bird views us is very dependent on their first experiences and memories.
